How to Increase HVAC Life and Efficiency

We all want our homes to be comfortable, but nobody wants to waste money by paying more for heating and cooling than necessary. Keeping your HVAC system running as efficiently as possible and extending its lifespan can make a big positive difference for your wallet. Here are a few tips to help you avoid spending more than you should.

What to Do

1. Change the Filter Regularly: One of the easiest and cheapest things you can do for your HVAC system. It is also one of the most important. Replacing your air intake filter regularly improves airflow to your HVAC unit. It also helps protect it from dust and dirt. Both of these benefits will make your unit more efficient and keep it from working harder than necessary. This will decrease wear and tear. The US Department of Energy recommends that you change your filter at least every three months. Once a month is even better.

2. Sealing and Insulating Ducts: Its not quite as easy as changing your filter. According to the EnergyStar.gov this can save up to 20% on your energy bills.  They particularly recommend sealing and insulating the ducts in accessible, unheated spaces. This could be spaces such as your attic, crawlspace, and garage. Use duct sealant or metal-backed tape (NOT “duct tape”) to seal the seams and connections between the ducts.

3. Regular Preventive Maintenance: EnergyStar.gov also recommends having your HVAC system checked out by a licensed HVAC technician. Twice a year is best, but at least once a year. This maintenance should include checking the heat exchanger for cracks or corrosion, cleaning the coils, lubricating moving parts, checking the refrigerant level, and for gas furnaces, checking the gas connections and burner operation. All of these steps will help your HVAC run more efficiently. It does this by decreasing wear and tear, and preventing minor issues from turning into much worse ones.

4. Install a Programmable Thermostat: This is another relatively easy way to increase your energy efficiency. Programmable thermostats come in many kinds, from very simple and basic ones that you program by pushing a few buttons, to smart thermostats that program themselves. Whatever kind you choose, the programmable thermostat can help you save money on energy bills by adjusting the temperature depending on your needs.
